Looking to the future is always an opportunity to reflect on the contributions made up until the present, and to reflect on unresolved needs and planning priorities. In the current economic climate, housing in general, and also public housing, is not seen solely as a product that satisfies our dwelling needs, but also as an object for sale, capital that creates expectations for the future and incorporates the urban value it generates. Housing is not considered to be a social need, but a market object. If a hundred years of social housing has failed to resolve the problem of access to housing for lower income classes, then there is a clear need for reflection on the solutions put forward to date. With that intention we promoted this Web and arose the publication from the book SOCIAL HOUSING IN GALICIA, than you can see extracts in the Web.

Desire to continue generating debate we ended to organize a small exhibition about Social Housing, in the Housing Office of Galician Regional Government, the present, past, and future of it, a summary through 37 activities built up in between 1911-2012, an “image” that we would like to echange end move all around, with possibilities of growing, and the intention to create opinion there where one is. Along with images of her, we published here an extract of our collaboration in the cultural program “MIRAXES”, being thankful to his team about the interest that they put in portraying some of social house neighbourhoods, their transformation, and the people who are contributing a creative vision of their surroundings.

Whilst access to housing is the most urgent social concern, the architectural debate amongst the new generations of architects focuses on the issues of territory and city in an attempt to understand and contextualise our projects, even though we are reluctantly forced to accept our condition as mere bystanders, and are aware of our lack of influence on the mechanisms that regulate them and the inertia imposed by both the economy and market.  Consequently, for some considerable time, architects have opted to focus on the issue of design, the interior of the space that surrounds our constructions, withdrawing from the debate which has deprived society of a more humanistic vision and solutions to improve the habitability of our settings, and the definition of the major concepts that confer significance on our profession, such as that of constructing and inhabiting. As a result the current debate in architecture is objectual and spatial rather than social, even amongst those architects who are most aware of their social function, and the solutions put forward merely attempt to adapt the product designed to improve the balance between their cost and use value, rethinking again the idea of the block of flats.

This exhibition, the existence of this Web, a book, any mass media or publicity is not enougth if we spoke about of the acess of house for all. But it is not sufficient to transform the present situation. In contrast to this virtual that the consumption improves, and the growing individualism of western society, there is a rising number of people in need of housing but who are unable to afford it. This dichotomy between desire and need, makes us think in the future that it can change yes the society acquires protagonism in the taking of decisions that affect to their coexistence and well-being. The house would have to be a public property, like the education and the health, it can be this possible one? , examples it has…
